Ginko Biloba Stump

I got a ginko at a nursury and put it in a bonsai pot and to get it to fit I had to chop the lower section of roots.... this ginkos roots were different than other root systems I have seen.....the trunk came down and just below the dirt level there were a good bunch of radiating roots...then the trunk started up again and a few inches down there was another set of good radiatin roots.....so any how I chopped the sub trunk just below the first set of roots and put my tree in the bonsai pot and put the stump in some dirt.
I heard that ginkos are able to grow from stumps...... Is spring an ok time for this or should I just toss the stump. Any body have any experience with this?

thanks any info would be great...
