I did exactly the same, as instructed by walter pall, since azaleas are the most back budding. I now have nice healthy leaves, waiting to become branches. Just don't disturb the root ball and you should be fine. In 3-4 weeks you should have buds coming out...however, I did mine in mid summer.

Also, azaleas enjoy partial shade so I would not put it in scorching sun! depends where you live ofcourse . Here in OZ, it's quite hot during the mid day.
