After the drainage holes have been covered with drainage screen and the tie wires are positioned, a layer of bonsai soil is put in the bottom of the pot with a slight mound of soil.

This medium is a mixture of japanese red soil (akadama) along with fine orchid bark, #3 sand and crushed lava. the akadama will be very good for the camellia because it can hold a lot of water yet still provide aeration.
