At this point I took some time to examine the tree from all angles and consider the "problem" of the complex apex. We could allow this bonsai to go on being a bushy topped thing forever and enjoy the flowers, or we could try to improve things a bit.
The large wound on the back side of the tree, combined with the root flaws suggest that the current front will remain the front for some time.
I considered the possibility of removing one or the other of the large branches that make up the crown of the tree. If you have difficulty visualizing a major pruning like this, you can drape a towel, sheet of paper or a bag over the foliage and see how the tree might look after it is pruned. Keep in mind that we are looking at the structure of the trunk here.
