Two areas on the front side of the tree also need treatment. These are old wounds where branches were cut away. In the past a slight stub had been left which interfered with the wound closing properly. Here we will cut the wounds flush.
Wounds on camelia and azalea and ginkgo should be made flush or slightly "proud" to the surface of the trunk. These trees are all slow to heal. Other fast growing species, particularly young ones, might have have shallow depressions cut into the trunk to allow the callus to "roll" into the wound as it develops.
Here, we'll just be happy if the large wound on the back side closes at all!
