You will definitely not kill it in this way.

You will probably want to begin creation of a flat, wide root system at the time you chop it, which means cutting the tap root rather high. If you plant the tap root so that the top 1/2" is sticking out of the ground, it will almost certainly sprout and, magically, you will find yourself in possession of two trees instead of one!
