The problem with this kind of theft is not Identifying but finding.
It seems to me that some kind of remote tracking device is what is called for.
A micro transmitter with the ability to switch on and track with satalite is not imopssible and would solve the problem completly.
On older and more valuable items your transmitter could be sealed into a waterproof unit and potted into the bottom of the root ball.
If your tree disapears you have the unit turned on and track it down, case solved.
They are already doing this with trucks and autos.
Sooner or later costs will come down to where we can do it with our better trees. Or at least the one tree in your collection that you feel would be the most likely to be stollen.
