Bonsai Today 88

Just got through rereading the current issue of "Bonsai Today". Gosh, this is a wonderful publication. I had some real concerns when ownership of this magnificent publication changed hands recently, but the new owners are doing a wonderful job with it.

There are two main themes that struck me in the current issue: repotting and matching pots to trees. Both were handled very well. I learned something about each.

No doubt, this will get a laugh, but I have to admit to mixed feelings about one of the best things about the new era with BT: the clarity of the articles. Back in the old days, the (apparently) English translations of the articles, which I believe were originally written in Japanese was absolutely laughable in its convoluted and, often, completely impossible to understand English. I simply couldn't understand WHAT was being said half the time! Many will laugh, but I actually found that to contribute some of the charm of this publication back a few years. The solumn tone, the obvious good intentions and good will and the completely indecipherable articles all made for a totally unique experience, interpenetrated by a sort of mystery, greatly contributed to by the style of writing.

Well, those days are apparently gone forever with the new BT and its crystal clear and understandable articles on every aspect of, well, Bonsai today! I love this magazine, even in its modern and understandable form!

Best regards, Fred
