Jay your right that was my point i sometimes just don't articulate my thoughts properly! and Larry as Jay says yes mame still have styles or they would just be little sticks in pots and the example pic is definatley semi-cascade. Although one last critique I would make is that if this bonsai were shown and judged upon in lets say in 5-10 years time, even with ramification and a more definative style, and the judge saw a silver birch without silver bark I think the judge would just keep on walking as would anyone with the knowledge of bonsai, its this species main feature, and because of the problems it presents elsewhere, is the reason it is grown, there are better species for ramifying and that react beter to basic styling.
Lastlly, however as Jay says if it currently makes you happy carry on with it, these are just my opinions in the hope that you will think about my reasoning and potentially make this into a good bonsai that is appropriate for the species.
