Hi Ralph,
I avoided cutting the roots by putting the tree in a little bit bigger container. I usually don't like to mess with the roots as in an actual repotting where you comb them out, and clean some of the old soil off, until early spring. For us here in Tx. that would be in Feb. to early March. I try not to be too stressful on my trees during the hot months which again for us would from late april till late Sept. and even into Oct. some times. I have a few procumbens which will be going into somewhat smaller pots, and I will need to do some heavy root pruning on them, so I'll be waiting until Feb. for this. Hope this helps.
