The quick answer is yes.. you can cut anything.

The real question is why? We do not cut for the cutting, we cut or remove for the sake of what remains. You are trying to produce a Bonsai. This will not occur with the first trim or the second or the third. It takes time.

You should have a clear picture in your mind or on paper of what the tree will be looking like down the road.. say two to five years... your pruning is to create that look.

If you just prune for no reason, you will probably not get a good looking tree in the future.

Another question is, are you cutting to produce shape and structure or are you pruning to create ramification? You can usually do only one... shape being first.
