Well,
As far as bonsai trees are concerned, Ficus are about as forgiving as they come. If you have an idea in your head of what you want your tree to look like, make an imaginary outline around the tree and anything that falls outside that outline simply cut it off.
If you could post a picture here and a description of what direction you are heading I am sure you will get ample help from others. It's hard to give good advice without seeing the tree first.
