Jeremy, I'm doing the same thing you are and have the same questions. I saw a picture of Walter Pall's grow beds awhile back and it looked to me like he does not allow alot of unrestricted growth, so, for the most part, I've been doing more rather than less pruning, much of it pretty severe. I THINK that may give the trunks more character and taper over time and encourage the devlopment of nebari. Time will tell. It is pretty amazing how fast little trees grow in either grow beds or grow boxes. I think they grow faster in grow beds but develop better roots and nebari in grow boxes. I've been very encouraged over the last two years at how my seedlings are developing. I've been doing some repotting this last week in the belief that Fall will be OK for my deciduous trees, a number of which I collected Fall 2001. Gosh, I hope so. Dead trees are SO disheartening!
