Glenn's advice is quite sound. Your thought of perhaps starting Pine or Cypress from cuttings is not likely to succeed. You might, however, look around for some hardwood seedlings to collect. Your prospects with this material are much brighter and will help you start to develop some understanding of what's involved with keeping trees in pots alive. Even here, however, a little "book larnin" of basics will really help you with your efforts to keep your collected material alive. In general, hardwoods are easier than conifers. If you look for species with small leaves, chances are good you'll get something that you might someday develop into a bonsai. I'm not sure where you live, so I can't give you any suggestions on species.
Good luck, Fred
