I am having a hard time discerning the tree from the background without Geodude's infrared film.

I can see based on the angle that the trunk emerges, that the bonsai would probably be tipped forward about 45 degrees, so maybe if you reshoot it with the trunk at that angle and something a bit plainer behind it, we could go from there.

I mean tipped forward as a book lying open on the table in front of you would be tipped forward to read. I wouldn't be hasty to cut off that left branch, It might turn out to be interesting.
