Undisputable Truths
We talk about the internet in bonsai and its relevency, enthusiast versus bonsaist, artist versus collector.
Some of the first threads talked about on the fledgling pages of bonsaiTALK were about mallsai, and their way of cheapening the word "bonsai." I remember the first time Andy came to the forum and talked about artistry in bonsai, Europe versus USA in artistic ability.
We talked of the word art and the way it is thrown about and somehow again dimishing the real artistic endeavors of those in the know.
Many times we have talked about stock, how it is grown, what is important, roots or trunk, nebari or branches. We have beat this horse so hard it had to be put down. Several times!
Undisputable Truths:
1. There will always be enthusiasts, and artists, hobbiest, and craftsman. I don't see any reason to seperate them, they will always be there!
2. There will always be collectors and artists. They will each show trees and claim them for their own. They will win prizes eventhough they did not create the art. So what!
3. There will always be someone better then you. No matter how good you get there is someone that will know more or have more talant.
4. Roots are important, including trunk, branches, ramification, wireing, and health.
5. There will always be someone that has better trees then you, more stands, a scroll, better suiseki.
6. You do reach a point when you actually learn no more. Some people just burn out and give up.
7. Some people will never get it, no matter how much they read or study.
8. The harder you train, the less likely your collection will grow. Trees just don't look the same as they did before, and the trees you want are always just out of reach financially.
9. It will cost lots of money if you want a quality collection. Quality bonsai comes from quality stock and they cost more money.
10. With time, every bonsai lover will gradually move to Suiseki, and then to Kusomono. Nature of the beast.
11. Kimura to the tenth power is out there.
