That's probably how your moss redeveloped itself! Next time you repot, use a chopstick or the blade end of a pair of tweezers to remove the upper 1/2" right up to the root crown.

The root mass and soil is very very compact around that area and didnt really want to risk damage to the exposed roots on the surface. Its always the same... the side of the tree that has the exposed roots is the side that is starting to get all the moss grow again. To remove the soil here I think would damage these roots...but then I am far from experienced
