That's probably how your moss redeveloped itself! Next time you repot, use a chopstick or the blade end of a pair of tweezers to remove the upper 1/2" right up to the root crown. Make sure your topdressing drains well.

I wouldn't worry about the growth of true lichens on the trunk unless it gets so dense you can't appreciate the tree.
