The "5-gallon" size doesn't really hold 5 gallons. It's sort of like a "10 gallon hat" that way, or maybe 2x4 lumber.

At any rate, you can prune the leaves some. Cut back at least one node (set of leaves) where you think the branches are too long. Cut about 1/4 inch above the next node and take another picture

If you do decide to chop the trunk at some point, definitely don't cut below the first node, and especially cut well above that point on the trunk where you see it go from green to reddish, because the tree is grafted there!
