Well after lurking about for some time, I think formal introductions are in order. My name is Cody Oliver. I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, which happens to be zone 3, we have an average 120 frost-free days a year. This is my first year attempting bonsai, my first year trying to grow anything really. At present I have two bonsai. A nine year old shohin Japanese Red Maple (Deshojo) and a five year old Satsuki Azalea, a mame, both purchased recently (and both fairly unsuitable for Calgary’s unpredictable and sometimes quite harsh winter). I also have a number of nursery plants that I haven’t begun any real styling on yet, these include a few more Azaleas, a Japanese Boxwood, a Cotoneaster, A Hinoki Cypress, a Juniper and a Spruce.

I’m quite interested in growing some trees from seed and saplings, because I like the idea of developing something from (almost) scratch. I have plans to start some Pomegranate seeds, and have some Chinese Elm cuttings on the way (from my local bonsai dealer).

Thanks to everyone who posts here, I’ve learned a lot already.

Cody
