I agree with you 98%...

I would say, "Never buy a sick tree for more than you would pay for the pot!"

I have had two successes by following this rule, and one dismal failure when I did not.

I think the pot will be okay as a recuperating area. The pot seems large and the soil looks porous. Junipers seem to thrive on the heat that the ceramic can collect in the sun, too.
