Bmaster, I'd be thinking "Growbox". I've planted a number of trees in growbeds (the ground) this year as well as a number in growboxes. I don't see all that much difference in their rates of development. Growboxes are simple and can be constructed from wood or from plastic washbasins or storage boxes with holes drilled in their bottoms. Only trick is to make them relatively shallow and reasonably spacious. The soil I'm using is very coarse; about 1/2 small lava rock, 1/3 bark based mulch and 1/6 garden soil. Main thing is to make sure it drains fast between the particles but holds water in the particles. Large clay flower pots work fine, also, but I'm getting away from them because in this area they break up during the winter.
Good luck, Fred
