For me they do.
Mind you the root system in these trays is limited to a depth of about 3 inches. This means that the trees are used to growing in a pot. The trays are full of fibrous roots. Root pruning is a dream and done on a regular basis with the snow shovel.
I don't have to chase the roots all over the place and train them to grow flat. Nabaries show up faster than when growing in the ground.
For me at least it is better all around.
But then to each their own ;o)
