everyone has to go through this. I used to grow vegetables and flowres from seed and had a lot of fun. Twenty yers ago I also tried trees.
Nowadays I think that this has absolutely nothing to do with bonsai, other than it is a little baby tree. It will take ten to twenty years to get a decent bonsai. This will NEVER happen in a small pot. The way to go is to plant these things into a growing field.
It may be fun, but it is a total wastre of time bonsaiwise. Mind you, I still grow tomatoes from my own seed every year with great joy.
Here is a good amur maple of Hans Kastner from Germany. He went to a large nursery and took the best possible maple which was more than 5 feet high. He then stumped it and got this impressive bonsai fifteen years later.
