Growing In The Ground

hi all i have recently dug over a new patch in my garden with a view to using it for growing my potensai to fatten them up .The problem is that the ground is very heavy clay [notvery good for developing a fine root system.]The heating in our house is provided by a coal and wood burning stove and it produces alot of waste ash .Does anyone know what effects this will have if i mix it with my clay soil SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T I .
i hope someone knows as sand is very expencive in our area [at least the amount i would need is]
