You can be pretty brutal with elms, especially healthy ones. You should be able to take 30-50% off without much trouble, unless it's all thick root with feeders only at the tip.

I agree with Jay that the nebari looks better from the left side than the current "front"- there's that "Pigeon Breast" thing going on on the right. Whether you can use this I guess depends on how much you want to restructure the branches...

I'll have to think abobut the branches.
