Red Leaf

Having read both parts of this article I feel more comfortable using a "non-traditional" maple as a Potensia.

I have decided to work a RED MAPLE (Acer rubrum) as a bonsai. These are Yamadori trees I have removed from the forest floor roots and all. All currently doing well thus far although they are under 1 year old at the moment. My concern is when should I actually start training these trees? They have good growth, a few leaf pairs and not large at the moment (largest is about 6 inches tall). Very fragile with very little "wood."

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as well as a more detailed article on pruning and training these types of Maples, especially in the area of keeping leafs to a minimal size.
