I don't believe branch building will require a larger container, trunk building yes.

If the tree is healthy and growing vigorously, building branches should happen relatively quickly by selecting the right buds as they pop and rubbing out unwanted ones...chanelling the trees energy into the branches you've selected works well.

Don't forget (as many people do) that the first internode on your branches should be somewhat close to the trunk. This often means cutting off the first leggy spring shoots and picking the next ones that usually have shorter internodes.
