'Slow Release" Bonsai Cake mmmmm

Hi Everyone,

I have a question about "Slow Release" fertilizer cakes.

I used this recipe:

3cups Kelp meal (cottonsead meal is hard to find here)
2cups dolmite lime
1cup bone meal
1cup blood meal

4 oz fish emulsion 5,5,1
20,20,20 to mix

A bit of flour as a binder

So I dried them up and they are ready to use. I put them on a few of my trees and watered. They seem to start disintegrating before my eyes.

Is this going to be "slow release"? Or is it that the compounds used relase slowly even if washed into the growing medium?

Have I made them wrong? They seem to crumble pretty easily.

I keep seeing people talking about taking them off after 4 weeks but I don't really see there will be anything to take off by then.

Thanks,

Mike
