Cool Prunus Mume Breaks Into Bloom

I guess I'm such a newbie! I went out to water this A.M. and my Prunus Mume (Jap. Flowering Apricot) was in full bloom and smelled so sweet, even my teenagers were impressed! It's in a 1 gal growing pot. The tree itself is 20" long and 1/2 to 1/4" trunk w/ some taper. It was started in a semi-cascade and I found it in a nursery. Didn't do much just slightly trimmed the trunk once in the summer to get more taper. I fertilized it in summer and left it alone this winter except for dormant spray . Now I have the best pink flowers. The trunk is small. I may be able to post a picture later this week my husband bought a digital camera but it's being shipped. Not sure how to style it? I would like to see some more depth to it, it kinda looks like a fat pencil now. I think it needs more branches but the flowers are pretty. I read that it should be pruned aggressively after blooming, but I'd like to get a thicker trunk. What do you all think?

Thanks for the input,
Lesley
