trident maple ground layering question

Al, Thanks for the fantastic Trident maple tutorials. I'll be looking at them again for instruction and inspiration. I've a question about layering to improve nebari (maple and zelkova). What about removing the tree from the bonsai pot and sinking the entire thing into a box, with a new soil line above the level of the ground layering? I expect the box could make it difficult to keep an eye on the progress of the new roots, but I am in an extremely hot and dry climate and am worried about having a small pot of soil around the cut area; it'll dry out very fast. I suppose I could enclose the whole thing in plastic. What would you suggest? Thanks again!
