I am always glad to get input from John. He has an analytical mind and has been more regularly attending classes with our teacher than I, so I am happy to hear from him for some of the finer points.
This tree does have some potential. I think you have probably done enough for now on it, unless you want to remove some of the new needles in those top candles with shorter needles. You don't want that to grow too much. I doubt that I would remove down to 5 pairs of needles, but I would take about half of the pairs.
