I'm having this same problem right now, so i'm submerging to try to force the worm(s) out, they seem pretty dead set on staying though. It keeps peeking out and then going back in.

While it was submerging, I noticed some extremely tiny little white worms made it to the surface of the water. What are these? Is there anything I can do to kill them without having to soak the plant (soapy water spray? safe pesticide?)
