If by "red maple" you mean Acer Rubrum, then no stratification is necessary. You just plant them as soon as they fall from the tree, and they'll sprout in about a week.

If you mean a red variety of Acer palmatum, these seeds require a cold stratification period of at least 30 days.

For Japanese maples (palmatum, buergerianum, japonica), I just plant them in the ground in the fall, and leave them all winter. Most of the seeds sprout the next spring, but some can take over a year to germinate. I had one sprout this spring that was planted 2 1/2 years ago.
