I have another take on the tongue-in-cheek ranking

Specimen bonsai - Any bonsai imported from another country, regardless of quality or price

Masterpiece bonsai - Any bonsai that cost more than it should have. (You may not create your own masterpiece bonsai, but you can certainly sell yours to someone else).

Good bonsai - Any tree that is neither Specimen or Masterpiece
