what always helped me to begin pruning a tree is to look for unwanted branches, you dont want branches that are...

in the "armpits" (where the branch meets the trunk) of a tree,
growing straight upo on a branch or,
growing on the underside of the branch

also look for branches crossing other branches, butif its a nice branch see if its ok to wire it before you cut it

on mugos dont pluck needles out becuase you can take out the dormant buds, i learned that after i pluck mine...

and for the candles on the your pine ( the new buds) cut 3/4 of them off once they are about 1-2" long,

you dont have to cut at three quarters if you dont want to,you can leave more on if you want your tree to grow bigger and sometimes people even cut it completely off but 3/4 shouyld be fine because its not a finished tree.
