For conifers especially pines i leave some of the old soil because it has the naural fungi in it that they need to survive , as for the deciduous trees i still leave a bit of the old soil if it is still good and not broken down because for me it seems like the trees regain strenth better and a little quicker. so maybe its just less stress on the tree leaving some of the old (but not broken down ) soil left

i may be wonrg i havent been oding bonsai for a while but my trees are doing real good .
