I feel you pain It sounds like it could be either birds or squirrels. Have you tried bird netting? you can get a roll for a fairly small price from home depot or lowe's. It's a black plastic mesh you drape over the tree, pot and all. Really works to deter birds and you can water/weed right through it (1/4" square grid) I have squirrels too and it keeps them out as well. And possums and raccoons. Hope this helps
