That is a shame. That being said, the red ones do tend to have smaller leaves than the green (the ones on my street anyway) so perhaps for a larger Bonsai it may not look too bad. No harm in experimenting I suppose.
I have heard that the amount of light a tree gets helps in reducing leaf size too and I will be growing them in a south facing garden which on a summers day gets about 14 hours of good light a day.
Perhaps I will try some and share my experiences, no harm in trying.
