I've been watering any time my trees need it, but always in the morning to start them off in the hottest days here in Michigan.

Not disagreeing, but the temp difference of the roots in a pot vs. the ground would be appreciable, so I think shock factor would be greater, not that I'm an expert on that at all. Mother earth also holds what ever water she has, and it is always available without one of use tree hearders on the end of a can or hose. So I guess it's more of a pot culture concern.
