Use a plastic storage box with lid or if you have small enough cuttings even toperwear will do. Dab the end tip with rooting hormone and place in the soil finally water and cover and give enough sun about 5 to 6 hours of direct sun will do. Ive done a few big cuttings with crab apple and they take very well. Never tried japanese maple or fire bush or whatever it is. But go for it. Ive found the trick is to take short cuttings but that thickness does not really matter unless if you take hugely enormous girthly cuttings. Anyways hope I could help some.
