Sounds of if the soil is well draining, that is good. With this type of soil water three times. Just a bit the first time to start wetting the soil. Wait a few seconds then water again fairly well. Wait a few more seconds and water the third time very well. This should moisten all the soil.
Also be sure to check to see if your tree needs water often. Then only water when the soil is almost dry. Try inserting a bamboo BBQ skewer into the soil, pull it out is see how wet the soil is.
