Hi welcome to the bonsai world. I started with a chinese elm tree and I still have it after twenty five years. When I started I read about bonsai trees enough to learn not to fail at it. Don't get me wrong I did lose a few here and there, but I learned from my mistake and I.m still learning. Here are just three things I can help with it
Buy a good book on bonsai for starters
Read it and practice what it says
Never feel that you will fail
Now here are three bonsai I would start you with:
Any type of Ficus, They love water and can say with out water for a while.
Japanese Juniper they are very hardy and they do great
Chinese Elm very nice trees and hardy
Fukien Tea can't kill them. Very nice bonsai
If you have any question drop me a note, I had many bonsai in my almost 30 years of keeping them.
Good luck
