Our peat moss is darker and finer than the European peat moss. (I just found a source locally for European and intend to try it)

You can use fine akadama, it's a very decent water retaining material. I have also used the Aussie Gold fine mix, for orchids. It works in a well draining mixture for shohin, and also for mame.
