Keep them in open ground for about 5 years undercutting the main taproot after 2 - 3 years. Start the training after the 5 years.
I've had an oak grown from seed for about 12 years and its just starting to look something. I once spoke to an established bonsai grower some years ago who recommended that oaks be placed in the ground for a season every five years to keep oaks healthy. Does anyone else follow this or has anyone continued growing oaks as bonsai in pots without die back or other problems? (pests notwithsatnding )
