i have collected literally hundreds of elms along railroad tracks and have never left a hole or a problem afterwards. you can collect these anytime of the year. why not? nobody wants them alive anyway so why not. i have collected even in the middle of summer and they are real tough. i would say i have had 90% success transplanting them. with a lot of work they can end up being really nice. dont have ne pics but some are really coming along nicely.
