I would think that you are taking very little risk with an air layer. If it fails, it most likely will just heal over, not die.
I diden't drill holes in the base. I made small upward slits raising small sections of the bark packing them with sp moss and rooting hormone. If this does not work i believe it will be difficult to even notice in a few years.

If I layer and it does not work, I think it would look terrible.
