Talk about kickin' a man when he's down! I'd post a pic of my hands but it isn't for the faint of heart. ...Honestly, I was so eager to get them out of the ground, I didn't even think about gloves until the damage had been done.

Anyway, I should have mentioned the trees' history when I posted. My in-laws have been there for 30+ years and the yew hedge was already there. About 10 years ago, my father in law tried to kill the trees by cutting them back to about 10" above ground level as they had outgrown their space. All he did was induce some great back budding which the deer have routinely trimmed back. Thanks for the comments,
