Wonderfully put.
I am a beginner, and though doing things by myself is meditational and fun, the best experience I have had is seeing someone in person talk about and work on bonsai.
My first lecture/demo was with Michael Levin at Bonsaiwest in Littleton, MA. I was amazed at all the people that came, some of which knew NOTHING about bonsai. He really added fuel to the bonsai fire that was burning inside me.
My second experience was at a Roy Nagatoshi workshop also in Massachusetts. Roy is a great guy with a good sense of humor and exceptional wisdom. I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
Being able to talk to, ask questions, and see for yourself really is priceless. I suggest it, even if you have to drive 2 hours like me.
