I also think it is probably an escallonia. Should be getting little pink flowers soon. They use them everywhere in landscaping in Northern California. Should make a good bonsai, though I have never seen one at a show. Four years ago I came across 3 that were dug from a landscape and thrown in a field. I retrieved one of them, planted it in a wood box, and it came back nicely. The trunk was about 5 inches across. I sold it to a club member for 40 dollars because it was more than I wanted to deal with at the time. Silly me.
